Green Hills Honey coffee is a true gem among specialty coffees, offering a sweet and balanced flavor with notes of honey, citrus, and vanilla. To fully appreciate its unique characteristics, we present a step-by-step guide to preparing it using the V60 method, known for its precision and control in extraction. This exceptional method will allow you to enjoy every nuance of flavor that this extraordinary coffee has to offer. And remember: the method matters, but the bean matters even more — start with a freshly roasted Colombian specialty coffee.
Ingredients:
- 20 grams of Green Hills Honey coffee, medium-fine grind
- 250 ml of filtered water at 93°C
- A V60 dripper
- V60 paper filter
- Server or mug
- Scale (optional)
- Timer (optional)
For best results, the quality of your coffee grinder is essential to achieve a uniform grind that allows for even extraction.
If you are new to the world of specialty coffee, this method can be an excellent introduction after embarking on the journey of specialty coffee with our beginner's guide.
Preparation:
- Prepare the V60 method: Place the paper filter in the V60 dripper. It is important to rinse the filter with hot water to remove the paper taste from bleached filters and preheat the dripper. If you use unbleached natural filters, the paper taste will be less present, but you should still rinse them a little to ensure the best extraction. Discard the rinse water.
- Grind: Grind 20 grams of Honey coffee to a medium-fine consistency. It should be similar to granulated sugar. After grinding, you will see the coffee grounds with the perfect consistency for the V60.
- Pre-infusion: To perform the pre-infusion correctly, pour 50 ml of hot water over the coffee, keeping it evenly suspended. Make sure to completely wet it. This can take up to 2 minutes and may require multiple pours depending on the freshness of the coffee. Let it rest for 30 seconds to allow for the release of CO₂ and the coffee's “bloom”.
- Extraction: Start pouring water in slow, concentric circles, beginning from the center and moving outwards. Pour 100 ml of water in one minute, maintaining control over all time and flow variables.
- Gentle agitation: At 1:30 minutes, gently swirl the dripper to ensure that the entire coffee bed is uniformly exposed to the water.
- Final pour: Continue pouring the remaining water slowly (the last 100 ml) over one minute and 30 seconds, maintaining a circular motion. During this phase, it is crucial to maintain control over the flow of the remaining water.
- Enjoy: Let the coffee drip completely. Remove the V60 dripper and serve your cup of Honey coffee. You can pair it with an affogato if you desire an indulgent experience.
The V60 and Other Specialty Coffees
Although this guide focuses on Honey coffee, the V60 method is exceptional for highlighting the unique characteristics of other specialty coffees. Natural coffee also greatly benefits from this method, as it allows its fruity notes to express themselves with clarity and cleanliness.
Why is the V60 my favorite method?
The V60 is my preferred method because it offers a sensory experience that allows me to have absolute control over every variable of the process. The ability to adjust pouring speed, contact time, and water distribution makes each cup unique and customizable to my preferences.
Comparison with Other Methods
The V60 stands out from other filtration methods due to its ability to completely control variables such as time, temperature, and water flow. Unlike the Chemex, which offers coarser filtration, the V60 allows for more precise and customizable extraction.
If you prefer methods with more body, you could explore the French press, although the result will be completely different from the V60.
Additional tips:
- Use good quality, filtered, or spring water for the best flavor.
- Pay attention to the water temperature. Too hot can result in bitter coffee, while too cold can produce suboptimal extraction.
- Experiment with grind size and water quantity to find your perfect cup.
- Adjust the pouring technique according to your preferences. A faster pour can result in a bolder coffee, while a slower one can produce a more delicate cup.
- The key to the V60 method is consistency: maintain the same time and technique in each preparation for exceptional results.
